In my primary gaming rig, the fan speeds were getting close to 5k rpm. Which is a fun RPM for cars, not for CPU fans. My initial thoughts were the stock cooling equipment was dusty, which wasn’t the case. Ended up buying an Artic Cooling Pro 7 or something. It’s been installed, RPMS are now down to 1600. Huzzah. Current layout below.

That's a nice looking cooler.

It looks like it should so the trick. It was a squeeze onto the motherboard. Apparently the RAM modules are pretty close to the CPU socket on my ASUS.

Heh, mine is running at ~1300 RPM, and I take it as a sign I really need to dust the HSF to quiet it down. Made the high RPM fan mistake once, never again...

And mine tops out at 1372 RPM, which it hits at 80 C.

I don’t think it’s gotten above 1150 RPM, based on my fan curves. The only fan I hear is the GPU fan.

Yep, that’s the way it should be. I recently upgraded from a fanless Radeon 7870 to a GTX 1070, which thankfully spends most of its time with its fans spun down, and even during gaming is pretty quiet (decided it was worth the price premium to get this monster for quieter cooling):

CPU is cooled by an old Scythe Mugen 3 (though I’ve switched fans on it, since the stock one was having trouble after a few years):

I’ve got a Scythe Kabuto II, myself, with the stock Glidestream PWM 120 mm 1300 RPM.

And my GPU is a reference cooled GTX 960 - my case’s design works best with blower coolers, so... (it’s an NCASE M1, for what it’s worth.)

I thought is was an unspoken rule that in gaming rigs that you should try to never use a stock cooler. Either way, now you know for the future.

This isn’t my first rig, that I didn’t overclock so I hadn’t bothered with extra cooling. It’s only been a problem as of recent.

Ah okay. The way I see it is to always get an aftermarket cooler because the stocks are usually only made for internet browsing, but that might just be the way I see it.

You’re pretty much right. I thought I’d be okay since the stock cooler looked legit with its copper piping and whatnot but it was a lie.

I honestly went with the artic one cuz I had one back in my e8400 days and it was good. Didn’t do much research. My i5 is a LGA 1156.
